Driving Real Progress: Transportation Research, Community Health, and Forward Visioning
Oliver Gao, CTECH, and Kaan Ozbay, C2SMART, led a plenary entitled Driving Real Progress: Transportation Research, Community Health, and Forward Visioning session, moderated by Cornell University’s Bridgette Brady, CAPP, at the Managing Urban Mobility (and Parking) collaborative meeting, November 12-13, 2019 in Brooklyn, New York at the New York University Tandon School of Engineering. The event was hosted by the International Parking and Mobility Institute (IPMI) and Connected Cities with Smart Transportation (C2SMART). The two-day event convened select leaders from the largest cities across the country for a discussion about the evolving mobility landscape and its effects on transportation and parking – and living – in our cities. Abstract of the talk:
In this presentation, Dr. Raysoni will discuss the various sources of air pollution in the southern Rio Grande Valley (RGV) region of Texas. His talk will especially focus on traffic air emissions due to both local and trans-boundary vehicular activities from the states of Tamaulipas and Nueva Leon in Mexico. The RGV region also experiences periodic high air pollution episodes due to agricultural activities and the speaker will focus on this as well.
About the speaker:
Dr. Amit U. Raysoni started as an Assistant Professor in the School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences from Fall 2018. He pursued his MS in Civil & Environmental Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and Ph.D. in Environmental Science & Engineering at UTEP. He also has a second MS in Public Health from UTEP. Dr. Raysoni is an Air Quality Specialist and his research involves understanding the impact of traffic air pollution and associated respiratory health effects in elementary school children. His research work is at the intersection of environmental science, exposure assessment, and public health. Dr. Raysoni has done extensive air quality research work in the U.S.-Mexico border region, Southeast United States, and the Latin American nation of Ecuador. The cross-sector partners involved with Dr. Raysoni’s previous research work included U.S. Department of Transportation, the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Emory University, The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), The University of Texas at El Paso, and Texas A & M University.

USF ITE & CTECH Shark Tank Competition
CTECH sponsored a student competition at USF that took place on October 4, 2019. Students pitched their research idea or project on transportation to the sharks, (judges), in a presentation type format. The presentations were followed by questions from a distinguished panel of USF faculty members. Congratulations to the winners of the competition: Chao Ye, Xiaowei Shi, Rinku Bhadja!
